I don’t think there is a more common task to any DIY person than plumbing, whether it’s fixing the pipes or the tap (faucet); you will usually find behind a great DIY person is a number of experiences with plumbing. I honestly think if you haven’t faced a plumbing task, you can’t really call yourself a graduate of the DIY school. Replacing sink tap is a technical job that would own any man if it is rushed or done wrong especially if you consider how many designs of taps there are.

Kitchen sink tap replacement is generally straight forward as you can mostly see “under the hood” so you can see everything going on and where the faults lie but replacing bathroom sink taps could be relatively harder especially if it is designed with the house and all or it is a bathtub. Sink tap cartridge replacement is always a solution for leaking taps as they fit in most taps sold. You can all get the cartridges and replacement kitchen sink tap handles from your local handyman service and you can also get the pull out kitchen sink mixer tap washer replacement.

I will be giving step by step directions on replacement of kitchen sink tap handles

STEP 1: Turn off the water supply and turn on the Tap – Before you start any work on replacing the sink, you need to turn off the water supply. The valve is usually located under the sink or close by. You will also turn on the tap so that any remaining water can come out. Check both the hot and cold taps and make sure they are completely empty.

STEP 2: Remove the old tap: To remove the old taps, you will have to unscrew nuts that hold it in place; most times the nuts are located beside or underneath the taps. The nuts could be any size so you should have your adjustable spanner ready. You will disconnect the water line from the tap

STEP 3: Remove the old and replace with the putty – To make sure everything fits nicely, you will need to remove any old putty and grime also try and remove rust and mold. When you are done, use the putty plate provided on the sink and press it into place. Some taps come with rubber gaskets rather than putty so just set it in the hole of your sink.

STEP 4: Putting your new tap and installing its washers – Fix your new tap in all the relevant holes as depending on the sink design and the tap design. There may be few small unneeded holes or if your tap doesn’t fit, you make need to drill new holes. If the tap fits into the hole, you will then put the washer or mounting hardware usually underneath the tap and fasten it at each ends with a wrench. Make sure to check the instructions to see where the washer goes.

STEP 5: Connect the water line and clean the sink – Reconnect the waterline to the tap and remove excess putty.

STEP 6: Test the Tap – Turn on the tap and check for leakages, if there are some that can be easily done without taking the whole thing apart, do so immediately.
